前回は、マーモットの魅力と私の決意について深くお話ししました。
見れば見るほど引き込まれるマーモットの世界、日に日にマーモット愛は強くなりました。
2023年10月にInstagramを始め、200日間のカウントダウンを開始しました。
なぜ200日後だったかというと、４月には父が迎えるはずだった誕生日だからです。
父の誕生日には、ヒマラヤマーモットをお迎えし、家族みんなで笑顔を取り戻したいと思っていました。
毎日、Instagramを更新し、日々の記録やマーモットの魅力を発信しました。同時に、日本全国のマーモットの販売情報などを調べました。最初は、とにかくあらゆるペットショップに電話をしました。しかし、マーモットを販売する会社は１社もありませんでした。そもそも日本のマーモットが何匹いるかも、全くわからない状況でした。調べても全く情報は出てきませんでした。
得られた情報は下記のとおりです。
・過去にボバクマーモットやアルプスマーモットを輸入する会社が１社のみ見つかった
・齧歯目の動物は、輸入条件が非常に厳しく、毎年輸入履歴が記録・保存されていること
・上記の輸入履歴から、日本にはマーモットが20匹しかいないということ
・ヒマラヤマーモットは日本に輸入されたことがないということ
・日本には、上記以外にはマーモットに関する情報がほとんどないということ
これらを知ってから、とても落ち込んだことは言うまでもありません。
当時は、マーモットと触れ合える施設についても、正しい情報が発信されていませんでした。伊豆シャボテン公園でしか会えないという、間違った情報も流れていました。今では８つの施設でマーモットを見たり、触れ合ったりできます。
日本で、インターネットやSNSで確認できるマーモットの情報は全て調べました。マーモット博士を目指す以上、今日本にいる全てのマーモットも把握しているつもりです。（ストーカーではありません笑）もちろん、マーモットに会える施設にはすべて行きました。その頃には、2024年3月に突入していました。2024年４月にはヒマラヤマーモットを迎えるつもりが、前月になっても、できたことはマーモットの国内情報を調べ尽くすことと、国内のすべてのマーモットに会いに行くことだけでした。
ヒマラヤマーモットを迎えることは今のままでは難しいことを知り、私は仕事のつながりから、中国人留学生の友人に助けを求めました。驚いたことは、中国ではマーモットは家畜としてのイメージが強く、ペットとしてのイメージはほとんどないということ、マーモットが大切にされていないという現状です。
友人に助けてもらい、中国のブリーダーやペットショップ、関係する行政に電話をしてもらいました。しかし、ほとんどのブリーダーがとても冷たく、数十匹、数百匹単位で購入するよう促してきました。マーモットという命を扱っているような言葉はありませんでした。養殖場の方につなげてもらったビデオ通話の光景を見て私は大きなショックを受けました。そこには、まるで地下牢のような空間で、マーモットたちが身を寄せ合って、怯えていました。今まで見ていたマーモットの世界は、ごく一部だったのだと知りました。
私は、この事実を知り、家族の笑顔のためとはいえ、マーモットを迎えると軽い気持ちで思った自分を恥ずかしく思いました。「この状況をもっと詳しく知る必要がある。この問題を解決しなければ、この悪い状況はさらに広がる」と思いました。この現実を知ったのが、３月下旬でした。中国でのマーモットの状況を知り、中国へ行って現実を見なければいけないと思うようになりました。私は、2024年4月までのカウントダウンを１ヶ月延長し、もっとこの現実を調べることにしました。今でも、Instagramの多くのフォロワーさんに励ましてもらえたことは、温かい思い出として、強く心に染み付いています。
中国国内でのマーモットの虐待は本当に深刻な問題です。SNSを見ていると、一見、野生のマーモットたちは、幸せにのびのびと暮らしていると思われるかもしれません。実際は、野生のマーモットたちは、毎日ご飯を得ることも難しく、時には悪質なブリーダーが捕獲することもあります。人間に慣れているマーモットは、自然公園で観光資源として活躍するマーモットたちだけです。悪質ブリーダーがいる以上、自然で悠々自適に生活するマーモットたちの生活もいつ脅かされるかわかりません。悪質ブリーダーは、インターネットでわかるものだけでも、30件以上あります。私は、この現実を知り、悪質ブリーダーの撲滅もする必要があると決意しました。

Last time, I wrote in depth about the charm of marmots and my determination.
The more I looked, the more I was drawn into the world of marmots, and my love for marmots grew stronger day by day.
I started Instagram in October 2023 and started a 200-day countdown.
The reason I chose 200 days later was because my father's birthday was supposed to be in April.
I wanted to welcome a Himalayan marmot on my father's birthday and bring back smiles for the whole family.
I updated Instagram every day, posting my daily records and sharing the charm of marmots. At the same time, I looked up sales information for marmots all over Japan. At first, I called every pet shop I could find. However, there was not a single company that sold marmots. In the first place, I had no idea how many marmots there were in Japan. Even when I looked into it, I couldn't find any information.
The information I found was as follows:
- Only one company was found to have imported Bobak marmots and alpine marmots in the past
- The import conditions for rodents are very strict, and import history is recorded and stored every year
- From the import history above, it turns out that there are only 20 marmots in Japan
- Himalayan marmots have never been imported to Japan
- Apart from the above, there is almost no information about marmots in Japan
Needless to say, I was very depressed after learning this.
At the time, there was no correct information being provided about facilities where you could interact with marmots. There was also incorrect information circulating that you could only see them at the IZU SHABOTEN ZOO. Now, you can see and interact with marmots at eight facilities.
I researched all the information about marmots that I could find on the Internet and SNS in Japan. Since I aim to be a marmot doctor, I intend to know all the marmots in Japan. (I'm not a stalker lol) Of course, I went to all the facilities where I could meet marmots. By that time, it was already March 2024. I had planned to get a Himalayan marmot in April 2024, but even in the month before, all I had been able to do was research all the domestic information about marmots and go to meet all the marmots in the country.
I realized that it would be difficult to get a Himalayan marmot as it is now, so I asked a Chinese student friend for help through my work connection. What surprised me was that in China, marmots are strongly associated with livestock, with almost no image of them as pets, and that marmots are not cherished.
I called breeders, pet shops, and relevant government agencies in China with the help of a friend. However, most of the breeders were very cold and encouraged me to buy dozens or hundreds of marmots. No word treated the lives of marmots. I was shocked to see the scene on the video call that was connected to the farm. There, in a space that looked like a dungeon, the marmots were huddled together and frightened. I realized that the world of marmots that I had seen until then was only a small part of it.
When I learned this fact, I felt ashamed of myself for thinking lightly that I would welcome a marmot, even if it was just for the smiles of my family. I thought, "I need to know more about this situation. If we don't solve this problem, this bad situation will spread even further." I learned of this reality in late March. After learning about the situation of marmots in China, I felt that I had to go to China and see the reality. I decided to extend the countdown to April 2024 by one month and investigate this reality further. Even now, the encouragement I received from many followers on Instagram is a warm memory that is deeply ingrained in my heart.
Marmot abuse in China is a serious problem. Looking at social media, at first glance, you might think that wild marmots live happily and freely. In reality, it is difficult for wild marmots to get food every day, and they are sometimes captured by malicious breeders. The only marmots that are accustomed to humans are those that are active as tourist resources in natural parks. As long as there are malicious breeders, we don't know when the lives of marmots living comfortably in nature will be threatened. There are more than 30 malicious breeders that can be found on the Internet. I decided that it is necessary to eradicate malicious breeders after learning this reality.
